What we’ve been up to in the last couple of months

Spring has rapidly run into summer and the heat has hit with a vengeance. Thankfully the shade of the Walnut Tree is providing us with the perfect workshop to stomp cob and make it  into blocks ready for building. We’ve had many helpers alonside the usual volunteers, we had four WWOOFers for a week and we had a day visit from Class 3 who did a wonderful job building with cob. Anthony and his WWOOFers from Pentiddy have been helping us too, lending natural building expertise and serious power! Check out the amazing things they’re up to here: http://pentiddy.co.uk/

Our first scythe course of the summer went well, despite having to be postponed when Kate was taken ill. She is now fully recovered.

We also hosted a Devon Rural Skills Trust cob course in June. Participants we’re introduced to cob building gaining experience in the whole process, from digging cob out, to stomping, making blocks and mortar, and laying blocks on the wall. You can find out more about the DRST here: https://www.drst.org.uk/

Robert, Anne and John have been keeping the garden ticking over while I have been concentrating on the builidng work. Robert on handyman duties, Anne on weeding, and John with his irrigation responsibilites. It’s very helpful to have a core team who know the ropes.

So now the first summer crops are ready – peas, broad beans, salad, cucumbers, potatoes and soft fruit too. Our three ducks are gleefully scoffing slugs, and we have a chick! Just the one, but better than none. Baggins of course is lazing most of the day away in the shade between meals of rabbit and pheasant.

Summer Aikido Course

I don’t do holidays but the closest it comes is the annual Aikido Course in Cornwall. Five days by the sea with nothing to do but eat, drink, swim, sleep and practice Aikido! So from sunday 2nd of July until friday 7th I’ll be away. Kate will be with me for the first few days so we will need someone to feed animals and water the polytunnel during that period… any volunteers please get in touch.

Cobbers Work Party with Pizza and Cider

On Saturday 15th of July we welcome you all to come and join us for a day of cob building and general merriment followed by lashings of Velwell Pizza washed down by flagons of cider. The work day will run from 9am until 4pm but drop in at any point. Children welcome, please share transport. Please feel free to camp the night but let us know if you’re coming so we know how many to cater for.

Scythe Course

We have another scythe course booked in for the weekend of the 29th and 30th of July. Thre are very few places available so book now if you want to come! More info here: https://velwellorchard.org/events/scythe-course/

Learn about lime!

Anthony and Ele from Pentiddy will hopefully coming up in early september to help with the lime plastering. If you’re interested in learning about this amazing stuff let me know so that I can keep you informed.

WISHING YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY MIDSUMMER!
